My partner has just returned in floods of tears from seeing a specialist at Hope Hospital. She suffers from a rare illness (diagnosed 10 years ago) and has had over two months off work and several days in hospital over the past 12 months. Despite this she has just been 'fobbed off' as 'hypochondriac' by a consutlant she considered arrogant and who spent a total of two minutes in an hour long appointment (after a painful hour long wait) before making this sweeping statement. He discussed other patients in front of her, as well as describing her previous consultant (in front of her) as being 'duped' My partner is looking at having to drop a significant salary, successful career, possibly not being able to have children and yet 2 minutes is enough to say 'I don't care how you feel, you're not unwell' (due to lack of immediate results from a couple of unreliable tests). This is a rare and hard to diagnose/treat condition that the specialist professes to be an 'expert' in (even though he is basing this on a colleague's research, not his own). Yet he has point blank refused to listen to any patient feedback, lacked any manners with us and told her she could just be suffering from 'any old virus'. I was not aware that viruses return year on year, cause you to be confined to bed for weeks and can lead to permanent disability and inability to carry out everday tasks. We are now seeking an apology from the Chief Exec and will pursuing further advice from other specialists at other hospitals
