I was referred for a colonoscopy to rule out bowel cancer. I was, as one would expect, anxious and unsure of what I would experience - would it be painful, embarrassing, etc.
I wish I hadn't wasted so much energy worrying beforehand. I was quickly shown into a room where I could change into my gown and dressing gown in total privacy. The staff who popped in and out to check on my history, blood pressure and to fit a canula whilst I was waiting couldn't have done more to make me feel at ease and were all very friendly and efficient.
I was then ushered out of the second door in the room thus avoiding the stares from other waiting patients and shown into the theatre where I was made comfortable whilst the consultant explained exactly what he would be doing and before I had time to feel apprehensive, the procedure was under way with no pain, just a little discomfort at one point.
Afterwards I was wheeled to recovery where I actually fell asleep for a while. After a final blood pressure check I was told I could dress and the curtains were drawn round me.
When ready, I was taken to a kitchen area, bright and airy with lovely pastel coloured arm chairs, where I was given a choice of tea or coffee and a sandwich which, after not eating for over 24 hours was eaten with relish!
I then went home, having been told that nothing sinister had been found, thankfully.
I cannot express my appreciation highly enough for the whole experience. This was health care at it's very best. Thank you WHH.
