Working with a very dynamic team in a placement I have had the chance to lead the shift with my mentor and doing allocations and care for patients. Some particular members of staff on the shift made my shift a very stressful and testing one. After handover I asked a female permanent staff HCA to take over the level two observations she agreed and left the room. Everyone else proceeded to start their shift and the female member of staff was in the staff room for 30 minutes while the night shift member was waiting to go home. When I approached her she told me she had to take her time and night shift doesn’t end now she would go when nightshift had finished. While I was explaining to the female staff, the male staff (HCA) refused to take security keys as there was a new book that had been introduced while he was on his day off. He was being very loud and I had to leave the female one and sort out the male staff complaint.
In the end I allocated another member of staff to do the security and the other RMN to do level 2. My mentor was very supportive and was with me throughout the whole incidents. She stepped in when necessary. We had a meeting with all members and a briefing after.
