My adult special needs stepdaughter who has severe learning difficulties received a frankly hilarious appointment letter this morning.
She has tuberous sclerosis and this condition means she could potentially have kidney problems now she is an adult. To keep an eye on things, she has to undergo kidney scans every 2 or 3 years.
Her appointment letter helpfully says 'Please drink 1. 5 pints of water 1 hour before your appointment in order to fill your bladder. Do not pass water in the meantime as it is essential you arrive with a full bladder. Please be aware if your bladder is not full when you attend we may have to rebook your scan on another day. '
All that works fine for someone who hasn't got severe learning difficulties, doesn't mind drinking water and doesn't wear continence pads because they can't concentrate enough to have bladder control. Where is the patient centered care? Why do NHS IT systems not automatically flag up learning difficulties and treat the patients appropriately?
We have an icicle's chance in hell of getting her to drink 1. 5 pints of water and her full bladder will only happen by accident so no doubt we will see what happens on the day.
