"Excellent staff, but the place looked shabby - Bolton"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

(as the patient),

I was suffering from chest pains and went to Bolton, on ward D3. The doctors and nursing staff were excellent. However, the cleanliness could have been better and the place looked shabby.

I would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff in A&E and on ward D3.

Since receiving the comment "Excellent staff, but the place looked shabby" the Domestic Manager has undertaken a quality control audit of the ward. In respect of the standards of cleanliness the Domestic Manager allocated a score of 90.37%. A number of minor failures were identified by her, particularly in relation to the edges and corners of floors. Remedial action was initiated immediately.

The Trust is committed to achieving high standards of cleanliness and takes its responsibilities for this very seriously. D3 Ward is monitored on a monthly basis as are all the wards at the hospital by the Domestic Supervisors. Arrangements have been put in place for additional monitoring to take place on D3 Ward by the Domestic Management team to ensure the standards of cleanliness set are achieved and maintained.

A five year rolling programme for the refurbishment and redecoration of all our wards is due to commence next year. This will involve wards in rotation being decanted into alternative accommodation to facilitate work taking place to repair or replace any damaged fabric of the building, fixtures and fittings, replace floor coverings and redecoration as required.

The Trust believes this will ensure the standards of repair and decoration of all its wards will be maintained.
