I had a hernia repair at Sheffield Northern General, staying on SAU and Firth ward. I was very pleased with the surgeon, anaesthetist, consultant Mr Skinner and the SAU team.
However, I was not so pleased with the treatment I received from some of the nurses and also with the cleanliness on Firth ward. Also, I was distressed when I had a stomach upset, but I was left to my own devices, even though I could hardly walk.
The SAU team and Mr Skinner's team couldn't be faulted. The SAU team were very busy, but I was treated well and kept informed. Many thanks to the excellent SAU team and well as Mr Skinner and his team, they were absolutely fantastic, as was the after care (thanks to Iona from SAU).
When I had my stomach upset I was very disappointed with how the nurses reacted. The toilet was a mess (made by me) and left for 2 days. Some patients with more serious problems had to use the same toilets. No tests were done to find out what was causing my upset stomach until I insisted. There was also blood around the bin (not from me) and worst of all was the filthy state of some of the nurses/doctors uniforms. I have seen cleaner uniforms in a factory!
"Excellent surgical team, but big worries about cleanliness at Northern General"
