My mother was admitted to hospital with a hip fracture from her care home where she was living with moderate Alzheimer's. During her stay other medical conditions were found which resulted in her being moved to and fro between wards and resulting in no physio as promised! She was eventually, after much persuasion discharged but was re admitted two days later with a further break to her leg.
Although we cannot fault the care she is receiving from individuals we feel that the FORGET ME NOT booklet that we filled in twice is not being followed. For example my mum is told to press the buzzer should she need anything but does not comprehend what a buzzer is. The other very concerning matter is that she is being presented with food but doesn't understand what to do with it and so is loosing weight rapidly.
She is also now practically incontinent as a result of her stay...
In my opinion there seems to be a general lack of understanding for dementia needs for both patients and relatives as it is very upsetting to see your loved ones so frightened!
