About: New Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology Clinic

(as the patient),

I attended the gynaecology out patients clinic recently. I left the clinic crying....I was made to feel intimidated and vulnerable. I was not asked permission for a junior dr to attend a very intimate examination and was dismissed knowing no more than when I arrived.

The nurse who attended was lovely and so professional and sensed how upset I was becoming...a huge thank you to her. The very nature of this clinic is so intimate and the dr who saw me did nothing to calm or reassure me.

Thank you for taking the time to post on patient opinion.

I am sorry to read that you left one of our clinics crying and was made to feel intimated and vulnerable. We aim to provide a high standard of care and it is regrettable that this did not happen on this occasion.

I am pleased to hear that the nurse was there to support you.

I will share your comments with the General Manager and ask that they come back here with a reply to the issues you have raised.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

We are very sorry to hear that a recent attendance at a gynaecology clinic left you feeling upset and vulnerable. Please accept our sincere apologies for the insensitivity of staff at a time when you were feeling vulnerable. We will reinforce with staff to ensure they introduce themselves at the beginning of every consultation and be perceptive to patient’s wishes when they are being examined.
