My Father was admitted to the day surgery to undergo surgery for bowel cancer. Having to get updates as to my Father's progress became a task in itself. Firstly, no one seems to answer the the phone and when they finally do, all we got was the runaround and people telling us different things.
We were advised that he was in recovery, awaiting a bed on a ward so given the circumstance we could visit from 6pm. I then called the main switchboard to find out where we had to go only to be told in a rather curt tone, "you won't be able to visit him down there anyway".
After finally speaking to someone nice and half decent we were told to head back down the the day surgery unit and they would help. We arrived at 6pm and the nurse on the desk said give her 10 mins and she'll find out what is happening. 30 minutes later after seeing her on numerous occasions pass us by going into the kitchen and staff room we asked another nurse to assist.
The first nurse hadn't even enquired about my Father's whereabouts. We then got told he was still waiting for a bed (6 hours after his operation! ) and that we could visit but only one person at a time (the hospital website says two).
It's quite a daunting experience to see your husband/father lying in a hospital bed with tubes sticking out or having to wait in a hallway on your own so I feel they could have exercised a little discretion here and allowed the two of us in. All in all, not a nice experience from what was already a horrible day to have to endure.
