So my mother's cancer had returned. The multi specialty team discussed her case and she was pointed in the direction of Dr McKay who works as a consultant between the Beatson in Glasgow and the Lanarkshire Beatson satellite unit.
Dr McKay reviewed my mother and they had a clear discussion about her condition and treatment options. I felt that my mum was very much involved in the decision making process and the meetings at Monklands( with Kirsty there being a welcome familiar face) and subsequently at Gartnavel did not feel rushed or complicated.
The plan was to start a course of twelve treatment sessions at Lanarkshire Beatson after a planning scan in Glasgow. The staff in Glasgow were all great. From the ladies at the reception desk to the radiographers, domestics, porters and nurses. We met Dr McKay in the CT room. I don't know if that was due to lack of office space or had been intentional but we were comfortably seated and familiarised with the scanner. I thought it was a good idea. Rather than the person being taken somewhere we hadn't seen. He explained how the treatment worked and exactly what to expect.
My mum had to start her treatment the next day at Lanarkshire Beatson. We were all very anxious. Our fears were allayed as soon as we arrived when, as mum went into the building a very cheery receptionist called Sharon said " You must be ( mum's name)! Welcome! " Then my mum met the nurse specialist Julie King who has been a tremendous support from the outset. She has reassured my mum throughout her treatment and engaged with her and the family in a practical yet compassionate way. She obviously cares very much about her role but also empowers the person undergoing this treatment.
Complementary therapies were also available and there is a generous seating area and landscaped garden view. The building is spacious and affords privacy.
However it's the staff who make the experience as positive as it can be. They are a credit to the NHS.
I should also mention Pat. A lovely lady who volunteers with the cancer driver service. She took my mum one day and that was an immense help. These drivers are amazing. They are selfless too. Thank you all.
"The staff make the experience as positive as it can be"
