I am a polio survivor. I walk with the aid of callipers and crutches. I have to have my callipers and shoes made by the NHS. I have had to use orthotics for the last 57 years. I am now retired after working for 44 years.
My problem began in January 2016 when I, unfortunately, broke my left leg whilst wearing my calliper. I had been diagnosed with osteoporosis 14 years ago. The medication that I was using was no longer working. I had to have a new calliper made as my broken leg had become fatter. I had a calliper made which after the fourth attempt, 18 months later I took. The calliper is still not correct but I have to wear it.
As I have shoulder problems with using crutches for 57 years, I asked if I can have cosmetic callipers made. The lighter material that the callipers are made off, would help to save my shoulders having to carry my weight, I am 8 stone. Immediately I was told this would not be suitable for me. I explained that I had had this type of calliper in the past, but they were adamant that I could not have them!
Prior to breaking my leg, I found that I was one of the lucky ones and that the service I had received had been excellent. I am now at a crossroads. Due to the osteoporosis I have to walk around, obviously but try to only use my electric wheelchair when going outdoors. I need light weight callipers. I know that Strathclyde University are willing to deliver this service but have to be asked by the health authority to sanction this. Could the NHS get together with Strathclyde University and discuss this situation.
I am a very active person and with your help hope to continue to stay active
