My gran has been diagnosed with alzheimers and 2 years ago she fell and broke her femur which required a lengthy hospital stay in Hairmyres. The staff in the ward were fantastic and she was discharged with a care plan. Unfortunately this wasn't appropriate as my gran was unable to access the shower properly so the carers were unable to help her and the care plan was stopped. It took 6 months and after lots of chasing up before she eventually was issued a panic button and had her bathroom refitted which unfortunately meant she was left for 6 months without access to a bath or shower which is disgraceful. Last August her gp then referred back to East Kilbride social work (twice as the first referral was ignored) and somebody eventually came out to do an assessment in the October. However, the social worker forgot the paperwork and said she would be in touch. Well we have heard nothing, despite chasing it up with the department. This is absolutely disgusting and the care pathway for dementia sufferers needs to be looked at. Being diagnosed by a consultant then discharged with no support for the patient or the carers, and with no further medical reviews, is just not acceptable. I'm lucky that my gran has family to help her otherwise she would have been left with absolutely no help by a this social work department.
