My family have recently received support from sure start - we have 10 month old triplets. Unfortunately my husband and I don't have any family nearby so we have accessed a sure start volunteer's support for a period of around 8 months.
Our volunteer (Lisa) enables us to get out of the house and attend mum and baby groups - the little ones love this as they get a change of scenery and they love the nursery rhymes we sing at groups. It is also an opportunity for me to socialise with other mums. Lisa recognises the need for me to do this and is brilliant with looking after the little ones so I can chat and have a cup of tea. At one point she scooped both boys up onto her lap and was entertaining two of our three at once (I remember thinking "I wish I had a camera to show the value my volunteer brings").
The support staff are also brilliant - Emma has been involved with our family from the start. I am aware that she needs to assess our situation and she always seems to do so in a non-judgmental way. I always enjoy Emma's visits as she makes me feel less isolated and I feel supported when she visits.
We have also benefited from baby massage sessions at home as we were unable to attend the group sessions safely. Tatum carried out these sessions and she was a pleasure to have around. The little ones were also fond of her and she always made me feel like she had the time to teach us a skill we can benefit from for years to come.
A massive thanks goes out to Sure Start for improving our quality of life and enabling us to get out of the house more often.
