I had a finger joint replacement recently. Unfortunately I later had to rush to a&e at midnight because I could not pass water. I was catheterised to drain off the fluid and had to keep the catheter for two weeks. I was given extensive reading pre-op about what I should expect before, during and after surgery but no mention that I may suffer from fluid retention though I am informed that it is common. I am also told that urine retention can be extremely dangerous if not treated timely.
This is not a complaint, just that I think the possibility of this happening post surgery should be included in the pamphlets and what a patient should do if it happens.
