My mum developed a chest infection. She was initially treated with oral antibiotics via her GP. Unfortunately, the infection didn't resolve. She was reluctant to go into hospital and we were keen to keep her at home if possible. She was awaiting her review of her recent radiotherapy ( adenocarcinoma both lungs). The last time she had been sent for admission she had an upsetting experience at Monklands which I've already written about.
We managed to persuade mum to go to Wishaw A/E. The staff were excellent. They told mum about Hospital at Home, a service that may enable her to get intravenous antibiotics at home. The Consultant Dr Tariq was lovely. He and charge nurse Torrance liaised with the Hospital at Home team and swiftly set the wheels in motion to facilitate mum's treatment in the comfort of her own home.
The department seemed busy but I was amazed that several staff approached us and other patients to ask if we needed tea or any other refreshments. I felt so heartened by their approach. My mum felt acknowledged and cared for.
