My surgery was supposed to take place 10am on 27/9/17. I had rescheduled work and home arrangements and was ready for my surgery. Quite a standard day case of Ulnar nerve decompression.
One and a half hours prior to my operation I was contacted by the hospital to advise they were cancelling my surgery due to concerns around my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This is a connective tissue disorder which causes problems with my joints.
I had seen the surgeon three times and advised my condition. After pre op check, the nurse wanted me to see the anethetist, I saw them later that week and they confirmed that They would continue with the operation as planned. Until a different anethetist on the day of the operation said no.
The anethetist who knows nothing about my condition made a snap decision without consulting their peers who know about my condition. They decided that there had to be an intensive care unit should there be a problem. They don't have enough this at Blakelands, or any of their other hospitals.
The NHS waiting for list is another 6 months. There has been no effort made to try an alternative private hospital outside of their group.
I have been waiting for for this operation since May 2017. I still have no clue when, where or who will be performing my surgery.
I am still in pain.
Despite daily calls to the only helpful member of staff I have found, here I am almost a month later still waiting for for a date and relief for my pain.
So in conclusion of you have any type of underlying condition ask them at the first appointment and get it in writing that they will perform the operation. Otherwise I feel you will end up like me still in pain.
