My son was unfortunately admitted to the Paediatric Assessment Unit/High Dependency unit at Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital recently. He has a condition called Tracheomalacia which when flares up can cause difficulty in breathing and cause choking. He became quite distressed with his breathing and required sedation to calm him. He was then deteriorating which made him more distressed which gave medical teams no option but to admit him to High Dependency Unit, where he became too tired and exhausted to even fight his breathing difficulty. This gave cause for concern and required close monitoring on oxygen and heart rate levels as the were going down hill. The anaesthetist was called to assess and the the Consultant came and informed his mother and I that he was very unwell and may require to be ventilated and be transferred to Glasgow or Edinburgh for Paediatric intensive care unit. This was very scary to learn but would like to give special thanks to the consultants Vasu, Dr Prezveir ( sorry if spelling isn't correct ) and there was another which I didn't catch the name of.
I think a massive thank you goes to Amy - staff nurse in HDU who was there day time through to discharge. My son became quite fond of Amy and relaxed more as time went on. A thank you to Natalie who cared for him on Night Shift, there again, was there for his stay.
Kathryn and there was another ward manager I didn't catch her name were exceptional. They are brilliant at their jobs and manage a fantastic nursing team.
My soon has been admitted that many times that we actually have started to know the nurses by first name.
When a loved one is admitted is scary enough, but when the nursing and medical staff are caring and supportive such as the teams we had those 4 days means a lot so THANK YOU to all involved.
