"Still needs improvement"

About: Queen Charlotte's Hospital / Maternity

I had my first daughter here in 2010 and my experience was negative, I had to wait more than 3 hours after arriving for my appointments to be seen (I only had about 2 hours of really good care during emergency C-section and recovery).

This year, I noticed massive improvement at the anti natal Clinique, I was seen within 20-30 minutes of my appointment and that is acceptable from a busy hospital. I went for C- Section and I was satisfied with the service until a day before the operation, when all of us been called at the same time and had to wait hours to be seen and to be given medication. We then were asked to come the next day for the op, and that was another waiting game (there was no appointment system) and the C- section was done in between emergencies.

During C- Section I thought more than enough people were in the room and there was a constant flow of people coming in and out of the room which was not nice at all.

Recovery was fantastic as before and staff were kind and caring.

Two Days at Edith Dare Ward was mixture of good and bad experiences, night team kind and caring, but felt pressurised by day team and felt like midwifes wanted us to leave hospital as soon as possible. I felt if they could they would have sent us home on day 1 after the C- Section. At queen Charlotte I was sent home two days after the op on both occasions, however in Germany and most other parts of the world the average stay is 4 nights for better care.

Another improvement since 2010 was allowing a person to stay with the patient during the night, however I did not like the fact that a kitchen staff shouted at my husband not to make two cups of tea from the trolley at the corridors. She told my husband to only make one cup as the trolley was left in there for patients only and not visitors. The cost of that cup of tea is less than 10 pence for NHS, but my husband and others that accompany a patient in the ward could save NHS thousand, as he was doing everything for me and reducing the number of calls to midwifes and other NHS staff to help me while I was at hospital.

All in all it was a standard experience from an average hospital and that reflected in 3 star, Hospital has improved since 2010, but still there is room for further improvement to give better experience to mothers, their partners and children.

We chose this hospital due to reviews saying it was top hospital, in west London and lake of better hospital in our area (West London) and I honestly think Edith Dare Ward needs improvement, in form of smaller room to allow mother to get some sleep during the night. And also removing pressure from mothers to leave hospital after two days as standard, because every case is different and some people will benefit from an extra night at hospital.
