It seems that all of the 5 star ratings for South Bristol Hospital are based on the services provided by your day clinics and I agree with most of the reviews as I have had to use the clinics on occasion.
However, Ward 200 for care of the elderly is an exception to this.
There are some really caring nurses and nursing assistants on this ward but there are also some other nurses and assistants. and as usual the bad outweigh the good. Not necessarily in number but in the impression left on patients.
Older people unable to get out of bed are buzzing for help and very often, when the other staff are on duty, it is 20 minuets or so before someone answers. These people make the job harder for the staff that provide good care and double their work load when these staff are loitering around.
The other staff pay very little attention to the patents needs leaving the patient extremely upset.
All staff have a duty of care to these elderly people, who I know can be difficult at times, but some of the staff just think of the patients as nuisances to be dealt with when they feel like it until their shift is over.
I know the pay is not good for some of the positions but a little more perception at interview stage might help. These people are only employed by a superior who should have the skills to recognise the character of the person they are employing.
There should also be monitoring of staff attitudes on a regular basis. If the employees behaviour impacts on the patents badly or they are not pulling their weight with the rest of the staff they should be got rid of and someone with a better, more caring attitude towards the elderly, employed.
