I had my first daughter back in late 2017. The care I received was incredible! I arrived on the Midwife Lead Unit feeling very sorry for myself; I was in constant pain and had to walk in alone as my husband was looking for parking! I was immediately welcomed and reassured by Sophie who settled me into the pool room (think I may have cried with joy when I was told it was free!). Then the wonderful Caroline came in and supported me through the remainder of labour. Caroline was brilliant, respected all of my wishes for delivery and fully supported me to safely deliver my daughter in water with only gas and air as additional pain relief. Thanks must also go to the able assistant who added humour to the situation by dropping my placenta on the floor (don’t worry, I wasn’t planning on eating it)!
My daughter was born early evening so Sally took over our care for recovery. Sally and her colleague, Rachel were absolute super stars! Nothing was too much trouble for them despite them being very stretched with other women to attend to. They also seemed genuinely excited for our new family despite this being an everyday experience for them which made me feel so special!
I needed to be assessed by the doctors twice to ensure I didn’t need to go to theatre for stitches. Both doctors (I’m sorry I cannot remember their names!) were friendly and professional as was Morag who did our baby’s first checks before discharge.
Finally we must thank Kerry, the Health Care Assistant, who not only ensured I was well supplied with tea and toast afterwards but also provided some for my mum and husband. She didn’t even bat an eyelid when my mum cheekily asked for a top up on the tea! I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and just want to send some major appreciation to the team at AMH. I’d also like to thank my community midwife, Nik, whose down to earth, practical nature, empathy and common sense helped me through the first few hormone infused days at home!
