I was unhappy with the leaving of prescriptions in the foyer of the surgery here on the Island of Jura which is left unlocked 24 hour per day. It is done, it is said, for the convenience of patients and although, now, they are left still in the foyer, but in three boxes to split the alphabet, there is no real privacy to the prescriptions.

Not only is it against the law, I think it is a disaster waiting to happen. Yes, we all know that there is no crime on the Island, but we do have a tourist industry and although nothing has happened, in this day and age prevention is the best form of security.

Many drugs are valuable on the black market drug scene and although I have made references to all of this, I feel it has been ignored as not necessary security on our Island.

I believe the Medical and Ethics states that prescriptions should not be on show and there should be privacy. My family insists that all prescriptions are collected from the office and not put in the foyer.

Thank you for taking the time to make this posting.

You have justifiably raised an issue that questions the ethics of leaving prescriptions for patients in an open area within the practice where anyone can access these.

Having now had a chance to look into this matter, including the appropriateness of storing prescriptions for collection this way, I can advise that the Jura Surgery will be letting registered patients know that this system will change after a period of notice. The Surgery will be able to advise when this will happen. It is important to let people know before any change occurs.

I am very grateful that you have taken the time to raise the issue. This has given us an opportunity to demonstrate that feedback from patients is valuable and can result in positive changes in the way we provide services.

NHS Highland is in the process of checking that this issue is not being repeated elsewhere. We believe this to be an isolated incident but want to satisfy ourselves that best practice is in place. As a Board we want to take every opportunity to maximise patient feed-back to make sure any good ideas or learning is shared. Thanks again

Good Day,

I entered a story about, "Collection of prescriptions from surgery", under the name of Adamas.

When I entered the story I thought the site was something like a Blog site in which other people would pass comment and that was that. I did not realise the response that it would receive. Both my wife and myself are very impressed at the response and the speed that the NHS has acted on this. Although changes have not yet been implemented on the Island the surgery has informed it's patients, which has been done via the Islands monthly Jura Jottings, the changes are to come into effect in February this year. I would like to thank Patient's Opinion for all they do and have done, great site, great idea.

Thank you for your feedback. NHS Highland is very keen to seek feedback from patients and crucuially we are absolutely commited to investigate and make any improvements where possible . And if for any reason we believe a change is not required or appropriate, then we will explain our reasonsing. In this case Caroline Champion has swiftly and effectively co-ordinated a review, and in partnership with colleagues, agreed a plan for a change. My understanding is that change will take place with immediate effect. You may also be interested to know that we have shared this learning across all of our sites and reaffirmed what is required. Patient opinion is offering us additional opportunities to gain feedback, but we will continue to make sure we try and pick up and resolve issues based on day to day feedback.
