About: Crosshouse Hospital / Pain Management Service

(as a service user),

I felt that I was not listened to by the Pain Clinic.  All I was told by the Dr was that the Health Board was giving them grief about prescribing opiates. Their solution to my problem of chronic pain was to do nothing.  I want a second opinion or some help please.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Regeneration,

I have been asked to post this response from Dr Martin -

"I am sorry that you felt that you were not listened to. In recent years there has been a big increase in prescribing opiates for non-cancer persistent pain, but there is now strong evidence to show that this is not best practice for many patients. In response to this, and to reflect the growing evidence around best practice, we have developed different approaches. In general, we recommend guided self management, sometimes with the assistance of our colleagues in pain management physiotherapy, clinical psychology or the Pain Association Scotland (http://www.painassociation.com/). Patients unfortunately occasionally interpret this as “doing nothing”. When any traditional practice changes, it is important that we all sing form the same song sheet and I am sorry you have interpreted this change in practice as “not being listened to”. I will share this with my colleagues for their reflection as communication of this is of upmost importance so we share understanding of the way forward.
