"lack of choice of gluten free food"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Dieticians

(as a service user),

My appointment was in late Feb 2019 & I had my surgery at 4pm.

I would like to praise all staff from the cleaners to the surgeon.

Everyone was friendly and professional.

The only small thing i would like to pick up on, would be, my gluten free diet.

I stated from the first appointment that i need gluten free food, because of ceoliac disease. the staff member that brought the meals, was not aware that i had a need for gluten free food. They did manage to find some cornflakes for breakfast, but then brought me the ordinary menu to choose my lunch, there was nothing on the menu that i could eat. When i asked for the gluten free menu, there was not one.

I had to have whatever the kitchen could muster up.

Which was ok, however because i had mentioned my needs, i was disappointed that i had no choice.

Apart from the lack of choice of gluten free food, my  stay in the Pilgrim was most satisfactory.

Hi T J T

Your words describe the care the teams aspire to for each patient that we see and I am so pleased that this was your experience and thank you for taking the time to let us know.

I love that you have recognised the whole team includes everyone from cleaner to surgeon and that by working towards a shared goal we can achieve the experience you describe.

In relation to your issues around gluten free, all of our wards have a comprehensive Patient food service information booklet which covers diets including:

Dysphagia (swallowing problems) Halal Kosher Gluten free Vegetarian Veganhttps://www.ulh.nhs.uk/content/uploads/2015/06/patient-information-booklet-20141.pdf

I am sorry that you were not able to chose your food from this booklet. If you can let us know which particular ward you were on, we will speak to the nursing team to remind staff on the importance of meeting dietary needs for our patients. Our email is patient.experience@ulh.nhs.uk

Regards

Sharon

Hello and thank you for your response.

The ward that cared for me was 1B, it was only for one night, maybe if it had been longer, the menu would have been available.
