I suffer from primary vaginismus, so I was less than delighted upon being referred for a transvaginal ultrasound scan to check up on my polycystic ovaries. However, I needn't have worried.
The referral letter came with an information leaflet which mentioned that patients wouldn't be pressured to accept the transvaginal probe if they felt unable to do so. This was extremely reassuring. I was keen to give the probe a go, so informed the sonographer of my condition and asked if it would be possible for me to insert the probe myself. She readily agreed. Once I had successfully inserted the probe, I asked the sonographer to give me advance warning of any movements she planned to make. This she duly did.
I felt supported and cared for throughout the whole experience, and I am very grateful to the sonographer for making me feel more comfortable by accommodating my requests.
