"Knee replacement by Professor Lee at Grantham Hospital"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Dear Grantham Hospital team:

I am writing to you in expression of my gratitude to the team of excellent doctors and nurses and admin team in Grantham Hospital. I have recently undergone a redo knee replacement in Grantham under the care of Professor Lee.

I had been experiencing severe pain in my knee since the summer of 2018. I had been to the doctors and asked them to refer me to Prof Lee as I had heard that he was an expert in knee surgery and of his good reputation. I can now certainly understand why he and Grantham Hospital have such a good reputation.

Thinking back to the summer of 2018, my pain was so bad and I had to use a crutch at work. As my condition deteriorated, I had to move on to 2 crutches and it is not easy as a science teacher that had to look after 30 plus children at a time. Eventually, my pain was too bad and it was not safe and I was no longer able work. As the pain increased, alongside with the heavy pain killers and morphine, it also became difficult to look after my young family. I was desperate for a solution as it has really affected my work and family life as well as my mental health. I used to call Professor Lee’s Secretary regularly to see if there were any cancellations. I was prepared to take anything.

I would like to say a big thank you to Carol, Prof Lee’s Secretary for her patience and she has gone the extra mile to help me. We managed to secure a late cancellation appointment with Prof Lee. I would also like to thank the admin staff for their support and making my outpatient appointment possible.

The clinic staff in Grantham were very friendly and it is very easy to park. When I met Prof Lee in clinic he looked into my case in detail and understood my situation. At that point I was on a large amount of morphine but still in a lot of pain, which made me very depressed. After some x-rays and scans, Professor Lee got to the root cause of the problem and decided to operate on me urgently. I am very grateful that I have chosen such a talented and yet down to earth doctor to help me. I was then referred to the pre-assessment clinic, where I met a very nice team of nurses and nothing was too much trouble for them. I understood what would happen on the day of surgery and this is the first time that I have to felt hope back in my life.

After suffering with this chronic pain I was operated on in early February. During my stay in ward 2 I was well looked after by the nurses, physios and doctors. It was not long until I was discharged home and I have been getting better ever since. It has only been a few months but my life is now back on track. I am now off morphine and pain killers, no longer need my crutches. I have been back at work for a couple months now. The operation has given me my life back.

I am eternally grateful to Professor Lee, UHLT and the team at Grantham, who efficiently and effectively dealt with my case and gave me an excellent service. Grantham hospital is a great example of our achievement with the NHS.

Warm regards,

Dear CON10

I would like to say thank you for your appreciative comments. I really love helping patients as much as I can and like to think that I make a small difference to their experience at Grantham Hospital.
