"wearing mandatory face masks"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

On visiting the hospital yesterday for an appointment, I was initially pleased to meet the staff checking that everyone entering was wearing a face mask. Unfortunately, I was shocked to see all members of staff visiting the shop AND the shop assistant NOT using masks. If masks are mandatory for everyone why are the people in the shop exempt. I think this is very poor practice in a hospital and not a very good example.

Dear Maskless

Thank you for taking the time to feedback your recent experience. I apologise if you felt the hospital was setting a poor example. The hospital has been following national guidance on the use of facial coverings in non clinical areas. The guidance states that masks should be worn when physical distancing cannot be adhered to.

Clear signage and physical distancing is in place in the shop and the shop assistant is protected by a clear screen. This week we have introduced designated visiting across the site and as there have been an increased footfall in the hospital, we have reviewed our local practice and we now recommend that all staff wear facial coverings in public and clinical areas.

I hope that you will see an improvement in the wearing of masks if you require to attend the hospital for any reason in the future.

Thank you

Lise
