"My mother has not been offered an interpreter"

About: Royal Preston Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a relative),

My mother is in hospital and is profoundly deaf, but has not been offered an interpreter.

My mother went in to The Royal Preston hospital with chest back and left leg pain. After investigations they found a possible blood clot on her lung. She has been there over night, and last night she texted me asking what a DNR is. I asked her why and she told me they were talking about it with her. I immediately rang the hospital to ask why they were having this conversation with my mother without a BSL interpreter present as my mum is profoundly deaf. The nurse told me it wasn’t an official conversation. I said regardless of whether it was official or not, they were discussing a DNR with her. She spent the night worried she was going to have an operation or something. They are writing things down, but it’s not good enough with someone who is deaf. She’s been there overnight and still hasn’t been provided with an interpreter, and I cannot go and see her due to covid restrictions.

Good afternoon, I am very alarmed by your feedback. We do have instant access available to BSL services be it face to face and video link. Please can you contact our PALS department who will ensure you have access to our interpreters and put you and your mother in touch with clinical staff who can explain fully any worries or issues you may have related to your mothers health. PALS are available on 01772 522972 or email pals@lthtr.nhs.uk

Sincerely,

Patient Experience Lead at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
