"Would help if someone listened to me"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I have been in and out of hospital several times in the last few weeks.

The last time I had no fluids or food given to me while I was on the Surgical Assessment Unit at Shrewsbury. Today I have the consequences of that. I am continually being sick. I now have a bout of ulcerative colitis and am bleeding.

If I telephone out of hours service I will get referred back to GP.

GP has had discharge letter last week which now states I have adhesions and nothing more can be done for me.

I look like I am pregnant due to bloating and pain.

I feel as if no one cares enough to bother about my needs while I am in or out of hospital.

I just want my life back so that I can continue helping others rebuild their lives from breast cancer or cope with disability.

I am fed up of being in constant pain with nothing being done.

What would help if someone listened to me and my needs instead of just informing me I have to live with conditions like these.

We were really sorry to hear about your experience. You obviously feel that no-one is really listening to you and trying to understand your needs. In case you aren’t aware Crohn’s and Colitis UK provide information and support to people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

We have many publications covering a range of subjects and we also provide a number of different helplines. These include our Information Service, which is available Monday to Friday from 10 am to 1 pm, with an answer phone available outside these hours. The number is 0845 130 2233. Alternatively you can email any information queries to info@crohnsandcolitis.org.uk

We also have a supportive listening service, Crohn’s and Colitis Support. This service is provided by trained volunteers who are skilled in providing emotional support to anyone who needs a safe place to talk about living with IBD. Crohn’s and Colitis Support is open Monday to Friday from 1 pm to 3.30 pm and again from 6.30 pm to 9 pm and the number is 0845 130 3344.
