"Lump on back of thigh"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I've had a lump on the back of my thigh for between 13-15 years, if not longer. It had never bothered me in the past, or caused me any pain. However, around 2/3 months ago, it started to grow in had somehow gotten infected and grown in size and colour. Instead of the normal flesh colour, it ranged between a dark red and purple. It also began to feel uncomfortable, even when I was sat down or lying in bed... Even rubbed on my work trousers and jeans. It got to a stage where it ruptured twice.

I got very worried so rang my Dr. They referred me for an urgent appointment with the Dermatology Department and I was seen within 2 weeks by a lovely young Dr named Laura who put me at ease straight away.. She examined me, had pictures taken and explained that I would probably need an MRI scan with the lump being as large as it was (7cm x 4cm). She also reassured me that she was sure it was nothing to worry about but needed to go through the correct procedures. She then rang me at home the next day and said instead of the MRI, she wanted me to be seen as soon as possible and get a biopsy. I was told I would be sent a letter straight away.. Which I did. I received the letter a few days later, as well as a phonecall to say that she had arranged for me to have an ultrasound scan at the Haywood Hospital  to see if what I had could be identified sooner.

The Dr that did the scan said he was certain it was an Epidermoid Cyst. The 2 days after the scan, I went to my appointment back at the Royal Stoke and had the lump removed by a wonderful lady named Dr Amarasena and her team Ange and Kirsty. They all made me feel comfortable and at ease, explaining all the time what they were doing. The whole procedure took about 20 minutes! I had 5 stitches put in my leg and that was it.. They explained to me my aftercare instructions and told me what I should/shouldn't do. I am waiting for my results now, which should get back to me soon.. I can't thank the Royal Stoke enough... From my original referral to my procedure had taken less than 4 weeks and I'm over the moon to finally have a flat leg again for the first time in a long time! ! ! Keep up the fantastic work guys... you are all wonderful xXx ❤️
