Four years ago I suffered a massive heart attack. I had seven stents fitted and have been on a lengthy medicine regime. My prescription includes Isosorbide Mononitrate, Aspirin, Bisoprolol, Furosemide, Nicorandil, Ramipril and GTN spray. In November 2020 I was informed that until I agreed a date [chosen by the surgery] for an annual health check-up, my prescription would be withheld. A prescription with life saving medicine. As I work away I offered dates in January which were refused. As a heart patient I have my health reviewed by a cardiologist not the GP. I have always been informed by the GP that if I experience heart related problems to go to the hospital not the GP surgery. However it is the decision by the GP surgery that has taken my medicine away and put my life at risk.
I was not aware the Annual Health Check-ups offered by a GP practice are mandatory and if a date cannot be agreed, your medicine held to ransom. This policy should be clearly stated on all GP and health web sites. The Annual Health Check up you are "invited" for is compulsory and will result in your prescription being suspended [no matter if that prescription contains life saving medicine] This policy by NHS Scotland is surely against Human Rights. I am in the grave situation that I will have to source a private prescription. Without my medicine my risk of heart attack increases and death. My alternative is to wait and suffer in pain and hope to get to an A & E in time. It feels like NHS Scotland have sentenced me to death by refusing my prescription. If anyone on this site can advise me how to obtain a prescription until I can attend a mandatory GP check-up, I would urgently ask you contact me, This is extremely worrying and is exacerbating my condition.
It is shocking that officials keep going on about the surge of cases the NHS expect in the winter but are adding to the problem with a policy that withholds vital life saving medicine.
