"Son's care following emergency surgery."

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Monklands / General Surgery (Wards 4 & 7)

(as a parent/guardian),

Following my teenage son's emergency transfer to Monklands A&E it was like he fell into an abyss! There was no communication from staff to inform me he was safely there and then heading to theatre. Then I was given misinformation about where he would be admitted to following surgery after having to make several phone calls to track his movements.

Felt initially staff were dismissive of concerns when enquiring how he was post operation when first admitted to a ward. Felt there was a lack of sympathy or understanding to what I was experiencing as a parent especially in the current climate, not being able to be with him. This was also his first experience of being in hospital & as being an emergency situation even more frightening for him. There was no contact from staff to convey most importantly my son was well after the surgery or the surgical procedure that had been required & if successful or not!

Once I finally spoke with a particular staff member, again I felt dismissed of concerns & questions of care I had for my son. There were no care aspects explained to my son as to wound care management & limited advice as to what precautions to take post operation. On collection of discharge prescription no explanation given re medication it contained and still no advice expressed as to post operation care.

Dear Ticktock17

Many thank for posting on Care Opinion. I am sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience as a parent during your son's recent admission to University Hospital Monklands. Communication was clearly a concern for you and I am keen to review what happened during this admission. I am also sorry to hear that you felt that there as a lack of sympathy or understanding regarding you as a parent. In order to understand what happened on admission, communication with yourself and your son's discharge plan, I would be keen to carry out a review of his care as this is not the experience we would want for you or your son.

Can you please contact me on 01236 748748 on extension 404401 and I will undertake a review of his care and provide feedback to you.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Eileen
