She is being kept (I. e. cared for) in a large and modern single room with no entertainment at all except occasional vehicles passing on the hospital access road outside the window. There is no provision for TV or radio, nor are there any books or magazines. Staff occasionally hurry past the internal window onto the corridor, visible only as blurred shapes intent on their duties. The comparison with a prison cell is irresistible, I fear. She is very patient and uncomplaining, realising she needs to be there until her breathing is better, but asked me about every half-hour, "When can I go home? " All I could say was, "When you don't need oxygen, and I'll come again tomorrow, with a portable radio and some gardening magazines" - which sounded a little inadequate. I must find out how to make a proper complaint.
