"Accident and emergency department East Surrey Hospital"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My husband was on a clinical trial through Royal Surrey in Guildford. He became ill after 2 doses and attended the emergency department at East Surrey Hospital taking his card with details of his treatment. He had difficulties in breathing and severe pain in the chest, throat and back, his blood pressure was raised.

He was sent home after 25 minutes with instructions on how to control his panic breathing and to rest, to lower his blood pressure, as they believed he was having a drug reaction. They did not call the number on the card, although it was in the middle of the day to get advice. The doctor saw him for a maximum of 2 minutes.

He died one and half hours later at home. The autopsy revealed he had a tear in the aortic arch to his heart, and this had gone unnoticed.

The hospital admit they should have looked more closely, but said they were too busy. There were things they could have done and had the correct diagnosis been made earlier they could have performed an emergency operation which may have saved his life. He was 49.

My opinion of East Surrey hospital emergency doctors and indeed nurses is poor.
