"Medical Care in Craigavon Area Hospital"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 3 South

(as a relative),

My elderly Aunt has been in Craigavon ward 3 South for 2 weeks during the latest no visiting period. This has made it extremely difficult to find out as her NOK what is happening with her care.

I have spoken to a nurse on the ward everyday and asked for a medical update everyday for 14 days with no one ever calling me to discuss her condition. Over the 14 days her pain has not been managed and her bloods have deteriorated and despite taking daily bloods nothing has been acted upon.

Working for nearly 20 years in the NHS I fully appreciate the ward pressures but feel this constitutes very poor medical management and I am appalled at the lack of communication with an elderly persons NOK. I am only posting this opinion in the hope that it will mean something changes so nobody else has to receive the poor medical management and utter lack of communication that we have experienced

Dear BMcniece – thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We do appreciate that it is difficult for patients to be separated from their families at this time. It is good to hear that you were able to speak with a nurse every day and I will certainly share your comments with our medical colleagues.

We do ask patients if they want us to communicate with their family or if they would prefer to do that, and we respect those wishes but based on your feedback, I have asked the medical team to ensure contact is made when updates are requested by next kin and permission to discuss medical condition is given by the patient.

I hope this will address your concerns

Best wishes

Good afternoon

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience within Craigavon Area Hospital. In relation to visiting, we recognise how difficult it is for families at the minute due to Covid 19 due to the current restrictions on visiting. We have introduced a Virtual Visiting Service within the Trust. This new service has been established to try to support families and patients during this time and enables families to stay connected.

I attach below details on how your family/friends can book a visit. Once a virtual visit has been booked our Virtual Visiting Officer will then goes along to each patient and set up the call with the virtual visitor using the Trust's iPads. These virtual visits can be with families or friends.

We hope that your Aunt is continuing to improve.

Kind regards

Mairead Casey

Dear BMcniece - Further to the responses above, we have asked the medical staff for their input into an updated position in relation to the issue of communication. They appreciate that they should be more vigilant in addressing any communication issues. This omission, which you have shared with us, is highly regretted and in future every effort would be made to meet the expectations of patients and their next of kin and dear ones.

We do appreciate you raising this issue with us

Kind Regards

Christine Armstrong
