"A&E treatment and great follow up"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Emergency Medicine NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as the patient),

I had to attend A&E after I injured my foot. I did find the questioning from NHS111 rather repetitive and completely unrelated to the problem but I appreciate that the call handlers have to go through their algorithm.  I was sent for xray straight away even though it was on a Sunday afternoon, and my foot was examined and dressed by an experienced nurse (Sammy) who was so kind and caring.  I was called back for an ultrasound with a consultant to rule out further injury which put my mind at rest. Dr Wilson then examined my foot with lots of local anaesthetic - thank you! - and the plaster technician Glen worked really hard to give me a foot support to let me walk better.

I really appreciated the level of care and attention I received despite the obvious COVID19 issues.  I work in the NHS myself and I know how hard it can be to keep going when you are short staffed and jobs are building up but I wanted to say how thankful I am to the A&E staff for coordinating my care and looking after me so well.

Hi ElginSky

Thanks for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I'm so sorry to learn about your foot injury. I hope it's not too painful and that you recover soon. It was kind of you to share your story and the staff at Dr Gray's in Elgin sound as though they deserve top marks for their person centred care.

I note you found the questioning from 111 repetitive and unrelated to your injury. As you work within the NHS, you will absolutely appreciate that patient safety is our top priority. Here at NHS 24, as we don't have the benefit of seeing our patients face to face, we need to ask questions to ensure patients are managed safety and effectively. Currently however, we are asking patients a number of additional COVID-19 related questions to identify those who may need specific advice or referral. We are listening to feedback such as yours, so please be assured this is very much on our radar. I'm sorry for any frustration this caused you.

Thanks again for sharing this with us. I'm sure my colleagues at Dr. Grays will be delighted with your feedback.

With best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Take care meantime.

Shona

Hi ElginSky,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this kind feedback for the A&E team. I'm sorry to hear that you injured your foot and needed to attend A&E but am delighted to hear about the care and level of attention you received.

As member of NHS staff I know you'll appreciate the ongoing pressures experienced by all teams. It's great to know that Sammy, Glen and Dr Wilson looked after you with such professionalism and compassion. I'll share your feedback with each of them and I'm sure this will give them a well deserved boost.

I hope you're ongoing recovery is going well.

Take care.

Louise
