"Visiting a relative"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Brownlee Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

A family member and I met with members of the team, including the consultant in charge of looking after my inpatient offspring. We agreed a specific arrangement to facilitate family members wishing to visit, due to the patient's concurrent psychotic paranoia.

When I phoned the ward to arrange a visit today, for the first time, I spoke to the charge nurse who had not heard of the arrangement, was not inclined to listen to me, refused to respect my suggestions, and abruptly ended the call.

Dear Washbucket

Thank you for posting on Care Opinion.

It’s disappointing to hear that a member of nursing staff was abrupt in the phone, especially during this difficult time. This is not the normal standard expected of our nursing staff. The Senior Charge Nurse has discussed this with the charge nurse and they have reflected on this and would like to apologise for this. The Senior Charge Nurse has also highlighted the importance of communication with the wider team to avoid this happening again.

Regards

Jamie Clark

Lead Nurse

Update posted by Washbucket (a parent/guardian)

Thank you for responding. Since I first posted, and quite quickly, I received a call from the unit indicating that the issue had been dealt with along the lines you have outlined. That is great. I would however like to point out that beyond the bare bones of the incident as published so far, there is a lot of hurt within the family about this and other similar, if more egregious treatment at the hands of caring professionals. You will understand then, that we do not take this lightly, and it is so important, and it would have helped us if we had been treated with the kindness that we would like to see everywhere. We soldier on.
