"Disappointing labour & maternity care"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

My waters broke at 36 weeks and 1 day so unfortunately I was told I couldn't birth in the DMU as I had planned and instead baby would need continuously monitored. My contractions were already starting but I was only 1cm dilated so I was taken to ward 38 to wait. It wasn't the best environment to try and bring on labour with bright lights and constant disruptions from staff which made getting any sleep very difficult. I was also told by one midwife that I should keep my curtain open, despite me letting them know I was trying to focus and labour in peace.

I felt the doctors were very pushing for me to be induced despite labour coming on naturally and only a few hours having passed since my waters had broken. Thankfully they let me wait 24 hours before making a decision. My contractions started getting stronger, more intense and very regular. I was timing them on an app which told me I was now in established labour. I told the midwife on shift that I felt I was in established labour and needed to go down to the labour suite as I felt my baby would be coming soon. They told me that they didn't listen to apps but listened to experience. It felt like I wasn't being listened to as I was a first time mum and because I didn't accept their offers of pain relief it felt like they thought I wasn't in enough pain. However, I wanted to go as natural as possible and they would have known this if anybody had looked at my birth plan.

I then got to the point where my body was starting to push so they finally checked me (after constantly asking them to take me down to labour suite) and they realised I was in established labour. They took me down to the labour suite on a bed and I gave birth within 30 minutes. After birthing my baby I was given an injection to birth my placenta. This was given without my consent. It was also stated in my birth plan that I wanted to birth this naturally.

I feel really disappointed by how little I was respected and listened to as a first time mum despite knowing my body and what it was telling me. At points I found some of the midwives were also quite rude to me. I am also disappointed that although there was a change in situation which meant I couldn't birth in the DMU; it felt like nobody even looked at my birth plan to see how things could be adjusted to make my experience better.

I would like to say, however, that there were a few excellent midwives who supported me after the birth of my baby. One of the breastfeeding supporters, provided me with endless hours of support when trying to breastfeed and I am so grateful for her as we are still breastfeeding successfully 6 weeks down the line. She was also so lovely and encouraging.

One of the other midwives was also excellent and was so helpful, empathetic and professional.

I also want to feedback that my community midwife was fantastic throughout my whole pregnancy.

Good Afternoon

Congratulations on the birth of your baby.

I am very sorry to hear about the experience you had in labour and on the ward before the baby was born. I would like to discuss this further with you if you wish. I would be happy to meet with you or talk via phone or email so I can learn more about your experience and understand how we can improve our services in the future.

I am delighted that you felt so well supported in your care after birth and that the feeding team helped you get off to a good start with feeding and you have continued successfully. Well done! I will pass this feedback on to the team.

Please contact me at donna.brough@nhs.scot if you wish to discuss further.

Donna
