"Lack of communication/poor care"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Medical Paediatrics (Children's Medicine)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has been having kidney infections since July 2020. On her 10th kidney infection in 2021 we contacted our GP because she was vomiting so much and had a temperature.  They wouldn’t see her unless she had a covid swab which she got the same day, but as the day went on she got worse.   I contacted NHS 24 who advised that because my GP was still open we had to go through them.  I contacted them again and got told the same thing about not being able to see her until the covid swab came back.

I had to argue with them until someone eventually agreed to see her outside in the car park and told me to take her straight to hospital. She ended up being admitted to Aberdeen children's hospital due to her being so ill with dehydration and needing antibiotics. During that visit the doctors decided to do a scan of her kidneys which showed one of her kidneys was larger than the other so they decided to do a scan in a couple of months to see if she had reflux.

The scan showed she was getting reflux in her kidneys and they wanted to do another scan which also showed reflux. At the start of May we got a phone call to say that she would be getting another scan and a slot opened up for for a procedure done in theatre.  We were never made aware to what exactly this procedure entailed, what exactly would be happening or what exactly it was for as we had already been told that she had reflux in her kidneys. We accepted the procedure, but then got a phone call saying due to lack of staff it would not go ahead and we will be given another date in due course.
The amount of time this has been going on for is absolutely ridiculous and for putting a small child through this amount of pain/discomfort is absurd. I feel covid is being used as an excuse at any given possibility for lack of staff, communication errors, time taken to be seen and not getting seen by a GP. Although this has been a negative experience for quite some time, some of the staff we have seen have give my daughter outstanding care and I feel that they cannot do their job to their full ability because they are so overworked and under appreciated that it results in concerns like this.

Good afternoon,

I am so sorry to hear of your poor experience within Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. I would be very happy to look into this in more detail. If you would like to contact me directly with your daughter's name and date of birth I can take forward the hospital aspects and give you a more meaningful response.

Kind regards

Sue Danby (Clinical Nurse Manager)
