"Problems contacting the ward"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Male Medical

(as a relative),

While her sister was in hospital my 82 year old aunt had been trying to arrange to visit but could not get through on the designated number. When phoned the recorded message played but when it was finished the phone hung up. In the end the only way to make the appointments was through a family member who worked for the Trust and could ring using that phone. There are families who wont have this resource but are as desperate to see their loved one.

I would also like to highlight the needs of those with hearing problems, who cannot hear on phone systems. It would be great to think the Health Trust could be responsive to such needs and have alternative formats for them.

Hi nuthatchsc66,

Thank you very much for your feedback regarding the booking system in place at present. I am very sorry to hear the difficulties your aunt had arranging a visit to see her sister. I understand that the designated phone number (02837 560793) can be very busy as this is a shared number for to Female Medical, Male Medical, Coronary Care Unit, Female Surgical, Male Surgical, HDU and Stroke Rehab. Therefore, the line can be extremely busy, which can be frustrating when trying to book a visit to see a loved one. I appreciate that the phone system is not suitable for everyone, namely those with hearing impairments as you have mentioned. The Trust is currently working with Digital Health Care NI to develop an electronic booking system/APP to allow nominated visitors to go online and book their visit. This will hopefully eliminate problems such as the ones you have mentioned and make it easier for everyone to book in and see their loved ones in hospital. We greatly appreciate your feedback and would love to hear your thoughts on the new system currently being worked on.

Many thanks, Patricia.
