"Disabled access to Mater hospital"

About: Mater Hospital / Outpatients Services

(as a relative),

I had cause to take someone to an outpatient appointment at the Mater hospital this week, and had rang in advance to check if I would be able to get a wheelchair, as the person I was bringing had poor mobility and could not walk from main entrance to outpatient department. I was advised to park in a blue badge space and ask the person in the security hut to either ask a porter to bring a wheelchair, or ask for a wheelchair, so I could assist the patient myself. On arrival there were no blue badge spaces so I parked in the main visitor carpark and walked to security hut as advised. The person there advised me that the porters were not insured to transport patients from the carpark and when I asked if they could get a wheelchair for me I was told to go and look for one myself. There was no one at reception to ask where to find a chair but thankfully a very kind domestic worker came to my aid, took me to level 2 where they knew there should be a wheelchair and advised me how to get to outpatients. I was so grateful that they went out of their way to help me. It was very difficult to safely use the wheelchair from the carpark to the hospital main entrance as the lowered areas on kerbs were all blocked by vehicles, so I had to assist my patient off the chair to bump the wheelchair up and down kerbs before helping them on again. All of this made the whole experience much more stressful than I believe it should have been. I suggest that the Mater hospital review their disabled access and the information given to patients who require assistance when attending outpatient appointments.

Dear Service User CJ72

Thank you for sharing your poor experience as a service user to the Mater hospital outpatients. Please can I personally apologise to you and your relative. I am truly sorry. The whole experience was very stressful for you which was totally unacceptable. I too have an elderly relative and can only imagine how this experience felt for you. We are a caring organisation and everyone working within the Mater hospital has a role to play in providing an efficient and compassionate service to all those using our services. I am sorry.

Any patient with poor mobility requiring a wheel chair to access our services must be accommodated and to have provided in a timely manner. I promise to take forward with the services. Going forward If there are no further blue badge spaces available patients can be dropped off at the front door. There are some comfortable seats for patients to wait while you park. However I appreciate this is often not ideal and often relatives need someone to accompany them to keep them safe.. I advise you to park and wait until a chair is made available to you. We are currently undergoing recruitment to have a ' Meet and greet' individual based at the front door of the Mater to help you with your journey throughout the hospital.. I fully hope this will be available on your next visit to us.

I am sorry you were asked to go and source a wheelchair on your own. This is not acceptable and I will take forward. Thankfully one of our kind domestic staff did stop to help you and I am grateful to her.

Again a massive thank you for sharing and within the organisation I will take forward.

Many Thanks

Bernie
