"Maternity ward Mat2"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I was an inpatient after the birth of my daughter in June . She was my first baby and I was struggling to feed her. A staff member was on and I asked them for some help. They tutted and told me they could only do what they could as they were very busy, and the baby might just have to have a bottle. I buzzed and called for help and after waiting for what seemed to be over 20 minutes they arrived with a bad attitude and made me feel like I couldn’t use the call bell again. I felt very let down by the lack of support they gave and made me feel inadequate as a mother. It’s a shame my first experience of maternity care in Stockport was a such a negative one and impacted me highly.

Response from the Ward Manager:

"I am very sorry that this lady did not receive the optimum care and support to feed her baby. All women should be offered breastfeeding support when they are on the ward. I will discuss this with all staff on M2.

I hope that she is aware of the breastfeeding support from the infant feeding team if she needs ongoing support.

If she would like to speak to me please ask her to contact me."

If you would like to discuss further, I am happy to forward on your details to the Ward Manager if you can let me know via Patient.Experience@stockport.nhs.uk

Kind regards,

Aoife Isherwood
