I was admitted to St John’s Day Surgery yesterday for a urology procedure. When I arrived I was seen by a lovely senior charge nurse called Mhairi straight away she put me at ease and was so kind.
The ward was quite busy but the nurses were always on hand if you needed anything. When it was time to head to theatre the theatre staff were fantastic. The staff straight away put me at ease as they started the procedure and kept me updated with what was happening at each point and ensured I was comfortable.
There was a nurse/ODP (Operating Department Practitioners) who sat with me whilst the procedure was happening I’m sure her name was Asma she told me she worked for an agency and was helping out. There was one part of the procedure that was painful and because I wasn’t allowed to move she let me hold her hand and squeeze it and encouraged me to breathe through the pain. She spoke to me the whole time and put me at ease as the distraction really did make it better. She was a huge help during the procedure and her kindness and support meant a lot. I’m not sure if this is possible but could you please pass on my thanks to her and find out what agency she works for and feedback to them?
Once I was in the recovery area the staff nurses were fantastic they made me laugh and always made sure I was feeling ok and got me something to drink and I was talking to them about my endometriosis and they were so understanding.
When I returned to the ward I was able to eat and drink and then the nurses came to make sure I was ok and give me my discharge letter for the GP and some extra dressings.
The staff I met made the experience so much better as it has been a very difficult time. The support meant so much to me and is appreciated a lot. I know that the ward was busy but they were always on hand to help and do such a fantastic job.
"Brilliant care"
