"Heart attack and cholesterol levels"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as the patient),

I am a female in my early 40's. I had a STEMI heart attack while on holiday in the USA 12 weeks ago. I had pre existing high blood pressure and hypothyroidism. Both were under control and regularly checked. Discovered yesterday via physiotherapist that my cholesterol had last been checked in 2018 and was 6.2 (high) - this has never been mentioned to me or checked again after 2018. I'm now wondering why it wasn't further investigated or treated? And if it had been I may not be in the situation I am now, heart attack survivor in my early 40's. Feeling very emotional and upset as I won't be able to speak to the GP directly until late September to find out reasons for not being advised/treated 4 years ago.

Dear Intensitymd48

I am so sorry to hear you had a heart attack whilst on holiday. I am sure that must have been a very frightening and worrying time for you.

I fully appreciate the concerns you mention regarding your previous cholesterol readings and the frustration and upset this will be causing you. I would propose in the first instance you discuss this with your GP practice who should be able to provide you with a full explanation around the decisions taken for your healthcare needs at the time in question. In the meantime, if you have urgent health concerns that cannot wait until the end of September, please get back in touch with them and let them know.

If, following speaking to your GP practice, you wish NHS Ayrshire & Arran to support you to get answers on the care you received previously, you can contact the NHSAA Complaints and Feedback Team on Telephone 01292 513620 (or Freephone 0800 169 1441) or email them at complaintsteam@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

I do hope you are now recovering from your health scare and on the mend.

Sending very best wishes,

Marie
