I am so pleased with the care that my elderly mum received from the A&E department at the Ulster Hospital. She was sent up by her GP due to triggers showing in her blood tests. When my wee mum, who has lots of health issues, arrived, she obviously like everyone had to wait for the triage nurse to access in which she then was told to wait outside. The positive of this story is when she finally got in to see the doctor, unfortunately I don't have names but he was young and made her feel at ease to discuss her issues. She was given a chest x-ray due to breathlessness and also she had fallen several times and one of these falls she bumped her head badly that it actually bruised her whole face.
The nurses were amazing with her and ensure she was comfortable because she was in for a long wait, not that we are complaining as we know the dilemma currently. The nurse could see my mum was uncomfortable so she said I have a pink chair for you and that is your chair for however long you will be here. Mum really appreciated her kindness, but later on a man came and said move along, therefore she wasn't comfortable. The same nurse came over and could see mum was uncomfortable and got that man up and give him her chair and she got the pink one again. The nurse said that is your chair and no one is getting it, it may sound minor but this meant a lot to my mum.
Later that evening the nurse said, "we are going to move you now", mum said "to a ward", she found out they were going to move her to the corridor on one of the wards, mum ask please don't let me go there, can I not stay here as I am frightened due to when I was a child things happened to me. The nurse said "don't you worry, leave it with me" . They had kindly let her stay in a trolley (which was very comfortable, mum said) in A&E. She was no bother and they kept checking on her as she couldn't sleep, which is normal for her. They were amazed that she read 1 and half books.
She needed to get an ultrasound, again, the doctor, a different one was very good to her. She said "I believe you want to go home", mum said "yes please". They are going to treat my mum as an outpatient which is fine.
My point of this story is to say a big thank you to the nurses and doctors for taking care of my mum like their own mum, it meant a lot to me that people cared about her, I hope that she will get the tests that she requires to see what is wrong with her soon.
Thank you Ulster Hospital A&E.
"A big thank you to the nurses and doctors"
