I was operated on in order to remove a swollen and leaking appendix this was successfully carried out to my knowledge in the September.
I attended my GP in the October stating I’m getting weird abdominal pains. I was told by the less-experienced GP it’s probably nothing to worry about.
In November was taken to hospital via ambulance From my house taken to SAU Then Gastro ward and told, it can’t be appendicitis, here’s some antibiotics which might affect your liver so we have to test you every day, it’s probably just an inflammatory response from the op (6days admission) my mum asked the surgeon if it could have been a stump appendectomy in which she was reassured this wasn’t the case and how much experience they had.
In December my stomach became turgid hot and I became increasingly unwell and had signed the operation consent to have my peritoneal cavity opened and examined resulting in a large scar and I was to prepare myself mentally for having an ileostomy bag fitted and I signed for this to take place or generally signing for a random internal surgical examination which I found vague.
I woke up and my existing wounds had been reopened and sealed back up and according to the recovery nurse the appendix hasn't been operated on properly the stump wasn’t sufficiently berried and it had the chance to grow back almost to full size again.
On making a complaint I feel the complaints review team brushed off the complaint by using carefully selected wording used in order to hopefully discourage a formal lawsuit so that no win no fee Solicitors wouldn’t take on the case.
The wording was round, it is of the opinion of the doctor in charge of your care on the *** December that you received the best care possible and no issues were identified by them or the other staff during the recent visit.
I feel the wording was put in such a way that it made it sound like the consultant had agreed with my whole treatment method entirely when in fact I feel they were only speaking about my last admission.
I feel ignored, violated, and it still affects me today. In my opinion the NHS Lothian did not handle my complaint adequately.
I spent a further 8 days in hospital over the Christmas period with a urine catheter, peritoneal catheter, NG (Anderson tube) down my throat and IM cannula for prn injectable anti sickness and various drips. Out my face on oxycodone every hour to keep away the pain until my post operative Illeus blockage went away.
All because of a mistake and a misdiagnosis and ignoring my mother's suggestion.
