"Referral to ENT"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a service user),

13 weeks ago my GP referred me to Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) as I have a goitre. I also have had post nasal drip and acid reflux, which already made swallowing/managing breathing while talking difficult.

A few weeks ago I contacted GP reception to see what position was with referral (blood tests in March showed that thyroid was neither underactive, nor overactive. GP reception said ENT backlog 7/8 months and it was possible they hadn't looked at my referral yet.

Phoned GP today and was advised to contact RAH directly. Only ENT can refer me for a scan. Haven't done that yet as quite emotional about whole thing. If it's not overactive, or underactive then what's causing it and is it a benign swelling or a cancerous one.

I made doctor's appointment within a couple of days of my friend, a retired nurse asking me what my doctor was saying about the swelling on my thyroid. I was confident that if there was anything sinister I had dealt with it early. Now I don't know what to think.

There is no ENT phone number listed on line for RAH, so I will have to go through the main switchboard. Does anyone know what waiting times actually are and/or a direct line number to ENT at the RAH Paisley?

Dear Waterbaby

Thank you for taking time to get in touch and I appreciate that this is worrying time for you.

Unfortunately waiting times are a challenge across many of our services right now but I would like to assure you that our staff are working hard to try and bring those times down.

If you would like to get in touch with your personal details (I.e. name and date of birth) I will speak to my colleagues for an update on the waiting times for ENT. The email address is PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. (It would be helpful if you could include your username in the email).

Thank you

Nicole
