Our education workshop

A while back I wrote in the BMJ about how much I didn’t know when I started out in medicine. And what I mainly didn’t know (if you see what I mean) was how it felt to be a patient, or someone who cares about a patient.

But because, increasingly, patients and carers are sharing their stories online, future health professionals don’t have to start out in the same state of ignorance as I did. On Patient Opinion, over 140,000 experiences of care are now accessible to healthcare students, opening up a wealth of new possibilities for education and training, both before and after professional registration.

We think the time is right for a half-day workshop to enable anyone interested in this potential to get together, share ideas, and make new things happen.

Patient Opinion in professional education

20 July 2016, 11:30am – 3:30pm

Birmingham

This informal half day workshop (11am - 3:30pm) will explore the value of online public feedback for health professional education and training. It will offer plenty of opportunities for learning, discussion, debate and networking to support further innovation.

Workshop participants will hear from:

• James Munro, Patient Opinion, on the vision and values inspiring this unique platform
• Helen Bywater, Sheffield Hallam University, on using online feedback for interprofessional education
• Kim Young, Ray Jones and Pam Nelmes of Plymouth University, on using social media and online patient experience in pre-registration nurse education
• Dorothy Armstrong, visiting fellow at Edinburgh University, on the value of patient stories in both formal and informal learning
• Anderson Pustam, South West London & St George's MH Trust, on feedback from students in mental health nursing

Key topics of discussion will include:

• What education objectives can online feedback help to address?
• What has been the experience so far of enabling student access to Patient Opinion?
• How should Patient Opinion evolve further to support students?
• How do we make the most of the unique possibilities which online offers? For example:
  • How do we make educational impact visible online?
  • Can we create reciprocity between story author and learner?
  • Can student participation support quality improvement in health services?

How to register

This will be a small informal workshop, to encourage learning, sharing and discussion. It is free to attend but registration is essential.
