We met with David Campbell, Project Manager with ENABLE Scotland recently.
ENABLE are keen to hear from feedback from a very select group of people and their families/carers: people with learning disabilities who have been affected by cancer. ENABLE are doing a whole range of things to hear from as many people as possible and we are really delighted to be able to help.
Here David shares more about the work he is involved in:-
At ENABLE Scotland we strive to ensure that people who have learning disabilities receive the same opportunities in life as everyone else. This includes the opportunity to use the NHS to its full potential regardless of any disability.
After supporting some people through a cancer experience ENABLE Scotland wanted to learn more about what having cancer is like when you have a learning disability.
We wanted to try and understand better if the opportunities for knowing what cancer is, its diagnosis, its treatment and aftercare or palliative care were any less for people with a learning disability and, if so, why and what can we do to try and address this inequality?
In order to learn more we set out a plan to find as many people as we can who have a learning disability and have been affected by cancer and would be willing to share their story with us.
We also wanted to find the best partner organisation to do this with. ENABLE Scotland knows that Macmillan Cancer Support is passionate about ensuring anyone who has a cancer diagnosis has access to all the support that is available.
Because of this we believed Macmillan would be the perfect partner for us in our quest to hear people’s stories. Macmillan was very interested in this so agreed to support us and work with us to reach the people we need.
ENABLE Scotland and Macmillan are now working in partnership to hear and learn from you! If you or someone you love has a learning disability and have been affected by cancer in some way then we would really like to hear your story.
Both Macmillan and ENABLE Scotland are committed to making a difference in the lives of people who have learning disabilities and have been affected by cancer.
This is your opportunity to guide us and tell us what you think works well and what needs to change.
We will be working with Patient Opinion to keep an eye out for stories shared by you.
