Understanding the expectations, experiences and priorities of patients is a vital skill for all healthcare professionals.

Until now, it has been difficult for clinical educators to access collections of authentic, unsolicited patient narratives across all sectors of care. Care Opinion is a not-for-profit online platform where users of care services can contribute feedback to which providers can respond.

Working with Care Opinion narratives opened my eyes to the other side of medicine, the side of the patient

This workshop will offer an introduction to features of Care Opinion that are useful to educators, along with a framework for narrative analysis. We will explain how patient narratives are incorporated in innovative assessment in an intercalated BSc at Imperial College.

Workshop participants will have an opportunity to engage with a curated selection of narratives and to practise applying the suggested framework for narrative analysis. There will be an opportunity to collectively reflect on affordances, strategies and challenges for including patient narratives in clinical education.
