"Dieticians should discuss cost with patients"

I have coeliac disease and I have always had a really good service from my dietician and get on really well with her.

However there doesn’t seem to be much communication with the pharmacy. I got a prescription and there was not mention of charges. I asked the pharmacist and they didn’t mention any charges and then when I went to pick up my order I got told I had to pay for each line of the prescription.

This comes to over £40 and I could have got a lot of the items cheaper from the supermarket. I now know there are options in place that mean I can have a prescription card etc but I think it would be good if the dieticians could discuss payments with patients before ordering products so it is clear what you have to pay for and how.

Would it be possible for you to get in touch with me (Helen, 01709 302042) to look into this a little further? I'll explain why this would be helpful.

If you saw a GP, and were given a presciption for your products, then there would be a prescription charge; however we may be able to offer a better service through the dietician.

If you were seen be a dietician already, then you'd have been given a voucher, not a prescription. This is because the dieticians cannot prescribe in the same way a GP can. The pharmacist should then not have charged you anything at all.

It may be that a genuine error has been made. If so, we'd like to be able to get in touch with the pharmacy, make sure that the money is refunded to you, and work with all pharmacies to ensure that this does not happen again.

Please do get in touch, so that we can sort this issue out for you.

Please also note that after reading your post, we have changed the voucher form that the dieticians issue. At the bottom, this now states clearly that there should be no charge for the products on the form.

Hopefully, this will ensure that if a misunderstanding has occurred, it will not do so in the future.
